The Focused Organization by Antonio Nieto-Rodriguez

There is a significant amount of detailed research into the thought processes behind the current management of many large and well-respected international companies in The Focused Organization.

From this, two groups have emerged – the ‘run the business philosophy’ and the ‘change the business philosophy’.

To some extent, these describe the old and new models of business management.

The importance of changing a business is clear, and the acronym FOCUSED says it all: Fewer projects, Organised staff, Competitive mindset, Urgency, Strategic alignment, Excellence, Discipline.

The first part of this well-structured book explains why most companies achieve only a fraction of what is set by management, and the second explains the benefits of the FOCUSED approach.

I particularly liked the way in which Antonio expressed his opinions and the way his research backed them up convincingly. I wholeheartedly agree that it is time the many benefits of effective project management are brought to the table – they have been neglected for far too long in many organisations.

Though the author comes across as being over-confident in his opinions, not allowing the reader to make up their own mind, there is indeed very little that could have been done to make this book more complete.

The Focused Organization would be of great benefit to senior and middle management as the theories that Antonio has put forward could be turned into essential management tools.

I hope that this will be the first of several adventures by Antonio into the world of corporate management, and that he continues his endeavours to restore the respect that the profession of projectmanagement is rightly due.
