Measurement and Verification (M&V) is the most critical component in any project where the savings of any form of energy need to be quantified and South Africa are seen as the leaders in M&V in the world.

In an initiative led by the University of Pretoria, an informative book titled: “Energy Efficiency Measurement & Verification Practices: Demystifying M&V through South African Case Studies” will be launched at the 7th Southern African Energy Efficiency Convention 2012 (2012SAEEC), on 14 November 2012 in the M&V Breakaway Session at Emperors Palace, Gauteng.

2012SAEEC will this year once again cover pertinent topics presented by over 60 speakers knowledgeable on topics in the mining and industrial applications of energy efficiency, building industry, renewable and alternative energies, and the related matters to implement management systems, policies, and adhering to standards and regulations, financing, incentives and tax rebates, as well as data analysis and reporting for energy optimisation.

The Energy Efficiency M&V Practices book encapsulates what energy management and energy efficiency is all about and is seen as a must-have reference guide that will take readers through M&V steps, techniques, challenges and lessons learnt demonstrating the effectiveness through real-life project case study information in a variety of industries and applications.

M&V performed in accordance with the SANS 50 010 standard, inspected by an independent third party that is a registered M&V inspection body, ensures that there is no conflict of interest between project developers and the relevant client, and provides maximum credibility and transparency of energy savings reported.

South Africa has over a decade of hands-on experience in developing the M&V market for the industry, and the experience gained has been captured in the format of a reference book. Written by M&V professionals in South Africa, the book is a collection of 32 papers on various energy efficiency M&V projects in the following industries and more:

Buildings

Lighting systems

Compact Fluorescent Lighting (CFL) mass roll-out programme

Compressed air

Cooling auxiliaries

Heat pumps

Air conditioners

Refrigeration systems

Pumping systems

Low flow shower heads

Residential load management

High and low pressure solar water heaters

Awareness raising and behaviour changes

The case studies in the papers cover project sites in residential homes, commercial buildings, mines, supermarkets, power plants, and more.

M&V methodologies is the main focus of discussion for each paper and real-life project information on state-of-the-art M&V modelling techniques which contain the baseline establishment, independent variable determination, baseline adjustment, metering plan design, and savings calculations for various types of energy efficiency projects.

In association with the Measurement and Verification Team led by Prof. X. Xia at the University of Pretoria’s Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering, Business Enterprises at University of Pretoria (BE at UP) Pty Ltd, a company wholly owned by the University of Pretoria offers to industry Energy Measurement and Verification (M&V) services for Energy Efficiency and Demand Side management projects; some of which the case studies in the book are based on.

Within the context of the developmental role played by municipalities and other relevant companies in industry also through advocating sustainable energy usage; the M&V services can assist Energy and Electricity divisions on a number of energy efficiency and demand side management projects in support of the Department of Energy’s national strategic objective of optimizing energy usage.
