How does PAS 55 and ISO 55 000 fit into integrated management systems

Leon Erasmus, a qualified industrial engineer at Pragma, presented a session at this year’s Physical Asset Management Conference presented by Pragma, today (Monday, 13 August 2012). Erasmus, also a qualified PAS 55 assessor, addressed the issue of how PAS 55 and ISO 55000 fit into Integrated Management Systems.

Erasmus explained how the managing of engineering assets such as facilities and equipment can be a challenging task and optimising their usage is critical. “To ensure effective utilisation of an asset, one has to make effective decisions regarding systems to assist in the management of the asset lifecycle.

“A plethora of standards have emerged to assist the horizontal and vertical integration of such systems,” said Erasmus. “Within the asset management field, several leading bodies and consortiums are focusing on standards development. ISO is the leading standards body that is active in the development of management system standards, and with the introduction of PAS 55 as a soon to be ISO standard, is attempting to standardise the road to effective asset management.”

Erasmus continued: “The objective of this presentation is to propose an approach for decision makers to develop an effective alignment of excisting management systems with a PAS 55/ISO 55000 compliant asset management system. I also wanted to provide a comprehensive review of standards relevant to the integration of asset management systems by firstly determining the body of knowledge and associated competencies, and secondly requiring the use of systemic, information-driven, risk-based decision-making to improve competitive advantage and reduce costs.”

Erasmus is employed by Pragma and is responsible for the implementation and management of the Zero Unplanned Stops (ZUPS) asset management philosophy and Focus Improvement (FI) business process. With 18 years of project management and business engineering experience in various industries and projects, Erasmus has taken responsibility for multi-disciplinary projects such as in the civil, mechanical and electrical engineering sectors, food preparation, manufacturing and distribution sectors, mining and heavy machinery, banking and financial services and FMCG business sectors to mention a few.
