The City of Cape Town municipality officially opened the renovated Myeza Road Park in Masiphumelele township between Kommetjie, Capri Village and Noordhoek to the public recently.

The park was in a poor state of repair before the upgrade and, as a result, it was not used very often by the local community.

There was a large hole in the middle of the park, the play equipment was badly vandalised and piles of household waste were dumped illegally.

In response, the City’s Parks Department initiated an upgrade that sought to deliver a quality play park to the area that the community could enjoy.

The upgrade project cost a total of R393 000 which was spent on the following:

    •    Refurbishment of all play equipment and installation of additional equipment
    •    Fencing
    •    Installation of rubber matting underneath the play equipment
    •    Planting of 20 indigenous trees
    •    Laying of over 1000 m2 of kikuyu lawn
    •    New park benches
    •    Galvanised bins

In the process of upgrading the park, six people from the surrounding community were employed to assist with the horticultural upgrades and maintenance, and at present the park is maintained on a daily basis by an individual from the area.

“The city recognises the importance of partnerships with our communities in ensuring that upgrades can be implemented and maintained successfully.

"This partnership is essential if we are to fulfill our mandate of being a caring city, and we will work diligently to ensure that this positive relationship is maintained,” said Councillor Tandeka Gqada, mayoral committee member for community services.
